2026 Special District Leadership Academy San Rafael

The Special District Leadership Academy (SDLA) offers curriculum-based training built around the essential partnership between board members and general managers. Designed for both new and seasoned board members, this conference equips attendees with the knowledge and skills necessary to lead effectively and uphold vital governance responsibilities in special districts. It fosters collaborative leadership and sets a strong foundation for achieving shared goals. First-time attendees will cover Governance Foundations, Board/Staff Roles and Relationships, District Mission & Community Outreach, and Board's Role in Finance and Fiscal Accountability. Returning attendees will explore advanced topics including public sector labor and employment relations, SB 827 Fiscal & Financial Training for special district elected officials, strategic planning, effective General Manager evaluations, the use of social media and AI for districts, handling disruptive public meetings, updates on the Brown Act and teleconferencing under SB 707, and district policy development. Completing the first-time attendee track qualifies individuals for the SDLF Certificate in Special District Governance.
