About this conference
The 2026 American Anthropological Association (AAA) Annual Meeting, themed "On the Verge," will convene in Saint Louis, MO. This intentionally capacious theme addresses contemporary global challenges such as the climate crisis, authoritarianism, racial biopolitics, neoliberalism, artificial intelligence, and teetering institutions. It encourages reflection on both endings and beginnings, exploring the space in between. A verge signifies a threshold—material, epistemological, moral, political, temporal, epochal, conceptual, structural, and systemic boundaries—and embodies an energetic, anticipatory state of heightened attunement for diagnosis, action, engagement, or intervention. The conference aims to be a generative space for invention, discovery, new ideas, practices, publics, alliances, and collectivities, promoting courageous experimentation and seeking nascent potential. The theme also reflects anthropology's perennial state of being "on the verge," striving for cultural understanding despite inherent limitations and critically engaging with societal issues. Participants are invited to submit papers, panels, posters, and creative presentations that explore various "verges," fostering a dynamic conference experience with the full breadth of anthropological knowledge and research.
