Norfolk Southern Railway Police Department
Work includes replacement of the 536-foot section of the bridge over grand river within the same alignment as the existing bridge. An access road will be constructed from the nearby highway entrance to the existing construction lay down areas at the east end of the existing bridge. Foundation construction will involve two new piers, one new abutment and two existing piers to be modified. Piers will utilize drilled shafts for the deep foundation, and the abutment will utilize driven piles. Superstructure construction for two through plate girder spans of 99. 5 feet in length each, one through truss span of 302 feet in length, and one deck plate girder of 31 feet in length (536 feet in total). The work consist of the following major items: 1. Coordinate relocation/modification/protection of existing utilities as required. 2. Perform formed concrete repair of a selected area of the existing pier top. 3. Remove the existing east tower entry stair and erect the new, free-standing entry tower and connection bridge way into the east tower. 4. Remove and replace the U14-L15 stair on the downstream truss of the vertical span. 5. Remove the timber stair and steel platform below the machinery house and erect new steel stair and platform. 6. Remove existing and install new walkways and platforms at the northeast, southeast, and southwest corners of the vertical lift span. 7. Erect a new multipurpose platform, including various stairways, on the east tower 8. Erect new walkways and supporting members at the sheave maintenance level of the east tower. 9. Erect a new walkway on the east tower counterweight. 10. Modify the existing handrail as needed for integration of the new walkways and stairways. 11. Continually re-balance the counterweight and vertical lift span throughout construction. 12. Apply concrete surface sealer to new concrete surfaces. See outside link.
