The event was a panel discussion titled "Reform in Action: Breaking Stigmas of Mental Health, Addiction, and Crime." The discussion focused on the intersection of criminal justice, social work, and psychology. Panelists shared their professional experiences and discussed necessary changes for reform. Key discussion points included the George Floyd incident, emphasizing the need for slowing down situations, employing active listening skills, self-assessment of biases, and incorporating empathy in law enforcement interactions. Furthermore, the panel discussed alternative emergency response models, such as co-responder programs or CAHOOTS-style interventions, to handle calls related to mental health, substance abuse, and homelessness without immediately dispatching armed police officers. Legislative efforts, including a proposed 3-1-1 system for non-law enforcement service calls, were also mentioned.
