Strategic Plan
This essay argues for a profound reinvention of research universities to fulfill their public mission and address contemporary societal challenges. It outlines four critical shifts: transforming from detached institutions to engaged community partners, expanding beyond traditional meritocracies to cultivate diverse talent pools, breaking down disciplinary silos to foster collaborative public scholarship, and moving from a 'cult of the expert' towards inclusive 'communities of experts.' The overarching vision is to reignite the American dream of educational opportunity and social mobility, making a tangible difference in society by training a diverse generation of civically minded professionals and leaders.
