Bluefield Town Council Public Hearing
The public hearing focused on the potential privatization of the town's water utility. Key discussion points included the need to maintain essential critical infrastructure, the impact of new EPA regulations regarding lead content in drinking water, and the town's ongoing plan to replace aging water pipes. The Town Manager provided a detailed analysis of the financial challenges facing the water fund, including rising operating expenses, a finite customer base, and the necessity of rate increases regardless of whether the utility is sold or remains municipally owned. Four scenarios were presented to illustrate potential future rate adjustments depending on borrowing requirements and grant funding availability.
