The board meeting involved public comment sessions where stakeholders advocated for hiring a drama teacher, raised concerns regarding teacher employment in financial negotiations, and suggested improvements for student reproductive education and middle school restructuring. The superintendent and department directors, including technology, facilities, and federal programs, provided operational reports. Action items included the approval of an employment contract for an assistant principal and special education provider contracts for the upcoming fiscal year. Board members discussed challenges related to electronic board packet distribution and ongoing budget frustrations.
Key discussions during the meeting included student celebrations, such as recognizing students at NBMHS. Public comment focused significantly on the Special Education (SPED) department, with advocacy for retaining the Director, Mary Donaldson, and concerns raised regarding technology issues impacting SPED teachers. Reports were provided by various school principals, department directors (SPED, Technology, Federal Programs, Facilities), the CFO, and the NEA Representative. Action items approved included the contract renewal with AKEBS for business manager/payroll services, the transportation contract with Morgan Enterprises, contracts for tenured teachers for FY27, the purchase of Chromebook Plus devices up to $90,000, an extension to the contract with Fremontii, Inc. for Owner Representative services, and a request to the Department of Education to extend the timeline for the NBMHS re-roof project completion. Board and Superintendent comments addressed budget concerns affecting teacher positions, advocacy efforts with legislatures regarding funding timing, positive updates on Title I-A and Title VI funding, progress on the second teacher housing project, and plans for future events like hosting a Raising the Bar grant meeting and planning cultural orientation.
The meeting commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance and the reading of the Nome Public Schools Mission Statement. The agenda was approved, followed by a public comment segment where a community member reported a missing raffle prize donation. The Board entered an Executive Session to discuss matters potentially prejudicial to an individual's reputation, reconvening afterward. In Action Items, the Board approved the principal's recommendation for permanent expulsion. During Board and Superintendent comments, topics included congratulations for the Spelling Bee winner, a request to discuss the dropout rate in a future work session, and a request for the Board Policy Review Committee to examine expulsion policies.
