The Roane County Board of Education held a regular meeting where they discussed summer camps and the 3rd Grade Retention/Promotion Camp. The board also received a presentation regarding Tennessee Scholars. The director provided updates on graduations, principal interviews, and the upcoming budget. The Business Manager's report included the financial report from April and the BASP audit report. The board approved the Board Member Conflict of Interest Policy and the Code of Ethics Policy, as well as the surplus of technology items. Budget Amendments for the General Purpose School Fund, Educational Capital Projects Fund, School Federal Projects, and ESSER 2.0 were also approved.
The meeting included presentations recognizing Teachers of the Year and the CTE Director. Discussions covered concerns about bullying, updates on TISA funding, ESSER furniture replacement, and various construction projects. The board approved a Testing Programs Policy, surplus items, budget amendments, an Interlocal Agreement for athletic facilities, and the transfer of land from "Drack's Track." They also approved rewarding top teachers and the principal of the year with an additional personal day.
The board recognized Midway High School student, Damaris Contreras, for making it to State in Cross Country. The board recognized Roane County High Schools Boy's Golf Team for winning the State this year and also in 2021. Rockwood High School was recognized for receiving the AF Bridges Award from TSSAA. The board recognized Mr. Tony Clower for receiving the TSSAA System Level Administrator of the Year for East TN for the 2021-2022 school year. The board discussed personnel changes, the Christmas Bonus for full-time employees, updates on roofing projects, TRANE progress and gym lights being replaced, land purchase, policies, school calendar, ESSER 3.0 Public Plan for Remaining Funds, budget transfers and budget amendment.
The meeting included recognition of a school resource officer for saving a student's life. The board discussed and received updates on the Trane project, furniture project, and a new law regarding 3rd-grade retention. There were discussions about hiring new SRO's and the land across from Roane County Park. The board also addressed policy revisions, surplus of items and equipment from various schools, a request from AGA Insurance, budget amendments, and the SAVE Act. The election of the Chairman and Vice Chairman also took place.
The meeting addressed the need for more TN Achieve Mentors and recognized Mike Taylor for his service on the board. The director reported on the positive start to the year, increased enrollment, and the importance of staff wage increases. Updates were provided on the TRANE project and truancy meetings. The board discussed new SRO positions, reviewed the financial report, and received a facilities report. The board also discussed and approved the Oliver Springs High School request to purchase "Turf Tank" equipment, Harriman High Track renovation request for approval, and to look for land for new schools. Recommendations were made to board members regarding their conduct in election races, online activity, and communication practices.
