The committee reviewed and adopted the draft report to the legislature, which summarizes facts and provides recommendations regarding foreign ownership of farmland. Discussion included the extent of foreign ownership of energy production, storage, and distribution facilities in Mississippi, with information provided by the Public Service Commission. The report also addresses water rights and facilities, noting that MDQ does not currently track foreign ownership in this area. The committee's assessment is that the situation presents serious concerns and recommends legislative action to address these issues, including the creation of a clear enforcement mechanism and seeking guidance from legal experts.
The meeting of the Mississippi study committee on foreign purchase of farmland included discussions on Arkansas Act Number 636 and insights from Representative Becky Curry regarding the bill's intent. The committee addressed concerns about foreign adversaries acquiring land, the enforcement of existing laws, and the balance between private property rights and national security. They also explored the possibility of limiting land sales to countries listed as threats by the United States Secretary of State.
