Plympton Elementary School Committee Meeting
The committee meeting included a public participation segment and confirmation that there was no new school committee correspondence. The consent agenda required separating the financials for separate discussion. Key discussions revolved around financial matters, including delays in receiving extended school year monies from the town of Halifax and strategies to cover an approximately $30,000 overbridge loan using grant money (specifically 262, 240, and circuit breaker funds). Budget discussions involved updates since December, noting changes such as removing the phone system from Capital Tech, adding funds for yearly playground inspection ($5,000), and accounting for tuition and transportation costs for three additional out-of-district vocational students, alongside increased special education costs. To manage the required budget increase, which was above the anticipated 2.5% allowance due to the vocational placements, cuts were necessary, including reductions in the curriculum budget ($45,000), technology ($15,000), and supplies ($2,000). Furthermore, FTE reductions were proposed for the librarian, speech, and school psychologist positions. The committee also discussed the rural aid grant allocation, noting a decrease from FY25 to FY26, and the current fiscal constraints related to Proposition 2.5 limitations and the impact of assessment increases on the total cost of education for Plympton.

Plympton School Committee Meeting
The meeting commenced with a duly noted public budget hearing for FY27, which was subsequently closed. The committee moved to discuss general items before adjourning to an executive session to conduct strategy sessions related to non-union personnel negotiations, litigation strategy, and approval of executive session minutes from December 15, 2025. Upon returning to open session, the committee addressed correspondence (none received) and the consent agenda, holding the approval of the financial report. Key new business included the recommendation to exercise the year 7 option for the transportation contract with First Student, which was acknowledged as a fiscal benefit despite general concerns about transportation monopolies and predatory pricing being discussed at higher levels (e.g., House Bill 4066). The committee also approved an increase in the hourly rate for the administrative assistant to the principal to $28.50. The principal's report covered updates on student population, training for the new H&H math curriculum, completion of winter benchmarking for Dibbles and Star assessments, the 100th day of school celebration, and the onboarding of a new custodian. Updates on CASA activities, including a staff luncheon and an upcoming talent show, were provided. Finally, the financial report, which noted negative line items related to collaboratives and ESY reimbursements, was reviewed and approved.
