The Education Roundtable of the MAGMA Advisory Council focused on the critical need for a skilled workforce to support the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and achieve climate goals. Key discussion points included the growth projections for EV sales despite a recent slowing trend, the challenge of 'charge anxiety' due to unreliable public charging infrastructure (currently at a 78% reliability rate), and the necessity of standing up a new workforce of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) technicians. The presentation detailed the responsibilities of an EVSE technician, which include repairing, maintaining, and troubleshooting charging station hardware, software, and firmware. The process for developing the SAE EVSE Technician Certification program was outlined, emphasizing industry collaboration to establish a body of knowledge comprising seven domains, including safety training (OSHA, NFPA 70E), electrical fundamentals, and commissioning procedures. The certification aims to standardize skill measurement and provide career pathways into well-paying green energy jobs.

The meeting included discussions about the Workforce Intelligence Network (WIN) and its role in collaborative training programs. The Health Careers Alliance was highlighted as an employer-led collaborative focused on healthcare workforce solutions. There were updates on apprenticeship programs and career awareness initiatives, including a partnership with Detroit Public Television. The meeting also addressed healthcare disparities and outcomes, with a focus on collaborative problem-solving and resource sharing among members.

The meeting included discussions and recommendations regarding Patricia Butler's nomination to the Workforce Development Board, the CTE 2025-26 Secondary Perkins Grant Applications for Region 29 and 30, and the CEAC PY 24-25 Second Quarter Metrics Report. Updates were provided on CTE programs, including the DCTC Career Fair, the CLNA and Opportunity Gap Initiative, and the Aviation Aeronautics Initiative. Adult Education updates were shared, along with community college updates. Kandy Lazell from LEO invited everyone to Rosie Day, and SEMCA updates were discussed, including challenges with WIOA funds and upcoming meetings with congressional representatives.

The meeting included CTE Program Updates, a Public Comment session, and discussions around the CEAC Metrics Report. The council discussed new CTE programs for Regions 29 and 30, community colleges updates, SEMCA updates, and adult education. The council also touched on the uncertainty at the federal level with WIOA Reauthorization and potential government shutdown.

This Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Local Plan outlines the strategic direction for the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance (SEMCA) Michigan Works! Agency from 2024 to 2028. The plan focuses on developing a skilled workforce, enhancing job-driven strategies within the One-Stop system, aligning economic, education, and workforce partners, and integrating local and regional plans. Key priorities include directing investments in relevant education and training, expanding access to services for all individuals (including youth and those with barriers to employment), strengthening employer engagement, coordinating with economic development, and ensuring continuous improvement and integration of workforce development programs. The intended outcome is to build a robust career and talent pipeline sustained by public and private partnerships, fostering a resilient and competitive economy.
