Convocation
The event served as a formal service to mark the beginning of the semester, intended to center attendees on the purpose of their gathering: knowing God more deeply and preparing to serve His church. The address emphasized that all endeavors are dependent upon the Lord. The speaker recounted the history of the institution's founding, mentioning the first president, Dr. Byron Hoover Dement, and the unconventional decision to establish the seminary in New Orleans, which was described as 'enemy territory.' The main textual focus of the message was Joshua chapter 1, verses 1 through 9, discussing the transition of leadership after Moses's death, the intimidating situation Joshua faced, and the dual nature of the promise concerning the land: it is a gift from God, yet requires active participation and effort from the people to secure it. A challenge was issued to prioritize weekly chapel services for worship.
