The event marked the 39th annual Enid and R. Crosby Kemper lecture, featuring Dr. Larry P. Arnn, President of Hillsdale College. The lecture focused on Winston Churchill's relevance in the current era, contrasting the changed global landscape (e.g., shifts in US economic primacy, growth of Chinese naval power, and the omnipresence of massive destructive capability) with Churchill's enduring principles. Key themes discussed were the importance of the English-speaking peoples sharing common reason and speech, the nature of war becoming devastating mass conflict, and the necessity for regimes to be trustworthy and protect liberties. The discussion highlighted that science's capacity to 'make' must be balanced by wisdom, referencing Churchill's concern over mass warfare and the role of liberalism in preserving individual human lives and freedom.
The event served as the introduction of Dr. Jessica Brown as the new Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. Remarks emphasized the strategic goals for the department, focusing on people, unity, enrollment growth, budget enhancements, and leveraging marketing for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and storytelling. Previous athletic successes, including academic performance metrics such as a 3.24 overall GPA, were highlighted. Dr. Brown outlined her initial priorities, which include establishing a culture of academic excellence, engaging with the community, securing a conference for men's volleyball, exploring sport additions, enhancing facilities, and fundraising. A call to action was issued to alumni and the community regarding support through attendance and giving.
