The City Council Work Session focused on the Church Street improvement project from Tarrington to 5th. Representatives from the North Carolina Department of Transportation presented an overview of the project's history, purpose, and need, specifically addressing safety and congestion. They discussed four alternatives, highlighting the challenges of the wide four-lane option and proposing a reduced two-lane alternative (Alternative 3) with a center turn lane, multi-use paths, and pedestrian improvements. The council, along with public safety officials, discussed the impact of this new design on emergency access, traffic calming, and long-term costs. The session also touched upon the connectivity of parks and the planned signalization at the intersection of Main Street and Church Street.

Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting
The commission evaluated a rezoning request for a property on Garden Road, seeking a change from medium density residential to general business. The applicant argued the change was consistent with nearby commercial uses, but the commission concluded the proposal was inconsistent with the future land use plan and incompatible with surrounding residential zones. Consequently, the commission unanimously denied the rezoning request. Discussion also touched upon alternative zoning options such as office or conditional business districts for future consideration.
