Board meetings and strategic plans from Shellie Bailey-Shah's organization
This document presents a problem statement and committee recommendations for a school district's long-range facilities plan. It identifies key challenges including declining enrollment, inconsistent educational experiences, varying facility conditions, and budget constraints. The recommendations focus on annual enrollment reporting, optimizing school utilization, minimizing split feeder patterns, reviewing attendance boundaries, and evaluating long-term capital investments in facilities. The intended vision is to achieve fiscal stability, provide consistent outstanding educational experiences for every student, and manage district resources responsibly and equitably.
This strategic plan outlines the Beaverton School District's commitment to engaging students in rigorous and joyful learning experiences, enabling them to reach their full potential and prepare for post-secondary education and career success. The plan sets a goal for all students to graduate with diverse options, fostering critical and creative thinking, content mastery, self-direction, collaboration, and global navigation. It is built upon four core pillars: Embracing Equity, Cultivating Collaboration, Expecting Excellence, and Fostering Innovation. These pillars guide best practices in teaching and learning, supported by principles such as creating flexible and inclusive learning environments, differentiating instruction, promoting cultural responsiveness, and ensuring student-centered approaches.
The meeting focused on defining and drafting North Stars, which are equity-centered, value-based principles intended to guide the development of the Long-Range Facilities Plan for the Beaverton School District. Committee members engaged in small group work to revise themes and draft potential North Stars, followed by a sticker voting activity for prioritization. Discussions clarified that North Stars are specific to this plan but nested under the broader Strategic Plan, and confirmed that the process is intentionally focused on centering equity by providing what individuals need to achieve similar outcomes. The session concluded with plans to review survey results and schedule a follow-up meeting to finalize the draft North Stars and develop corresponding planning implications.
This document presents draft recommendations, referred to as 'Guard Rails & Levers', aimed at addressing critical issues within a school district, including declining student enrollment, facility inequities, and budget considerations. Key areas of focus include establishing annual enrollment reporting, evaluating and managing school utilization, minimizing split feeder patterns, reviewing and amending attendance boundary policies to promote equity, and conducting comprehensive school condition assessments for future facilities planning. The overarching goal is to achieve fiscal stability and ensure a consistent, high-quality educational experience for all students through data-informed resource management and capital asset planning.
The World Language Project Team Meeting focused on the world language adoption process for the Beaverton School District. Key discussion points included a review of educational outcomes using backwards planning, and a deep dive into standards, best practices, and guiding principles, specifically referencing current research and actual drafts of the work developed by the cadre. A significant portion of the meeting involved examining the shift in standards from previous practices (which included reading, writing, listening, speaking, culture, and grammar) to the updated national standards framework from ACTFL, which emphasizes the five C's: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. The team discussed how the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) adopted three of the five C's (Communication modes: interpersonal, interpretive, presentational) but the team chose to integrate culture into all communication modes due to its perceived utmost importance. The session also included an icebreaker activity concerning family traditions related to pets.
