The commission discussed the composition of the police chief hiring board, specifically addressing concerns regarding the appropriateness of having the interim chief serve on the panel that will select his successor. Proponents argued that the interim chief brings valuable operational knowledge, cultural insight, and understanding of case law to the hiring process, facilitating a smoother leadership transition. The conversation also touched upon the inclusion of county representatives on the board and emphasized the value of diverse opinions in the final selection process.
The commission convened to conduct a final review of the 2027 budget. Key discussion topics included miscellaneous expenses involving library renovation funding and adjustments to budget projections for specific development projects. Additionally, the commission coordinated the scheduling of a future special meeting to address housing and property development matters.
The Commission discussed the formation of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Badlands Outdoor Aquatic Association, to manage fundraising for the city's outdoor pool project, alongside the creation of a steering committee. Key actions included the approval of an HVAC unit replacement for a municipal building, the passage of a resolution for property annexation, and the adoption of a resolution supporting the 'Operation Green Light' initiative for veterans. The Commission also conducted a first reading of an ordinance regarding the establishment of a municipal Job Development Authority and approved the hiring of a new police officer.
