King County Flood Control District Flood Hazard Management Plan
The Lower Green River Corridor Flood Hazard Management Plan is a comprehensive, long-term strategy by the King County Flood Control District designed to reduce flood risk along the 21-mile stretch of the Lower Green River. It adopts an integrated floodplain management approach, balancing flood protection with environmental stewardship, economic development, and community priorities while honoring Tribal interests. Key strategies include incorporating climate change projections, maintaining and improving existing levees and floodwalls, exploring levee setbacks and property acquisition, and prioritizing nonstructural solutions. The plan aims to achieve multiple benefits such as equity and social justice, environmental justice, habitat protection and salmon recovery, resilient communities and ecosystems, productive and viable agriculture, sustainable development, jobs and sustainable livelihoods, open space conservation, sustainable and clean water, and recreation, to ensure the corridor remains a safe, thriving place for generations to come.
