245 Leroy-Gridley State Assessment Review for Budget Considerations
This State Assessment Review for Budget Considerations from 245 Leroy-Gridley details the significant barriers impacting student proficiency on state assessments. Key challenges identified include difficulties in teacher collaboration scheduling, high rates of students from low-income backgrounds, declining enrollment, challenges in retaining and attracting qualified teachers, increased student trauma and social-emotional needs, limited access to community health services, special education funding shortfalls, learning loss from the COVID pandemic, and high absenteeism. Proposed budget actions to address these barriers include increasing staff salaries, hiring additional personnel for learning and social-emotional support, enhancing funding for staff development, expanding extended school year and summer school programs, increasing Pre-K funding, and allocating resources for trauma and mental health interventions. The document emphasizes that, due to various external factors and systemic issues, providing a precise timeline for all students to achieve grade-level proficiency is unrealistic, and stresses that assessment scores should not be the sole measure of student success.
