It aims to build a state where everyone, including historically marginalized communities, is respected, protected, and connected, leveraging the strength of its diversity.
The California Climate Commitment is Governor Newsom's comprehensive plan to address climate change. It focuses on three key areas: protecting Californians from the extreme effects of climate change, leading the world in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and delivering clean, reliable, and affordable energy, and saving Californians money while creating prosperous communities. The plan involves a multi-year investment of $53.9 billion, aiming to fight climate change, improve public health, and foster a clean energy workforce for the benefit of all Californians.
This strategic plan outlines a roadmap for California to significantly increase the pace and scale of forest management activities by expanding the use of beneficial fire, including prescribed fire, cultural burning, and fire managed for resource benefit, through 2025. The plan is structured around nine key goals: developing a robust beneficial fire workforce, empowering the private sector, expanding cultural burning and tribal engagement, improving regulatory efficiency, protecting public health, building public support, facilitating larger and strategically located burns, utilizing fire managed for resource benefit where appropriate, and improving data collection and utilization. The overarching vision is to deploy beneficial fire on 400,000 acres annually by 2025, fostering a culture of beneficial fire to address ecological, climate, public safety, public health, and cultural needs.
The meeting included a review of the highlights from the June 15, 2021, AC meeting. OHE updates were provided, including Health and Safety Code Section 131019.5 A-N social determinants of health, what state and local health departments can and cannot do, ways health departments and community-based organizations can work together, and his vision and ideas for working impactfully with the AC.
