The ASHRAE Annual Conference Plenary Session in Indianapolis focused on the future of the HVAC and R industry, emphasizing decarbonization, sustainability, and innovation. Key highlights included a review of society-wide accomplishments, such as record-breaking government outreach, the publication of new standards and guidelines, education and training initiatives, and fundraising successes. Awards were presented to recognize achievements in research, paper writing, chapter programs, and government affairs. Additionally, the society's leadership outlined future strategic objectives, including the development of a new strategic plan, the launch of the energy code official training and education collaborative, and the assessment of membership dues models.

The Council acted on several items during the session. They waived protests for multiple alcohol license renewals and a new manufacturer direct shipment license. Several resolutions were adopted, including authorization for municipal insurance coverage payments, support for the State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation's proposal regarding the PM2.5 nonattainment area, approval of the Police Department as the fiduciary for the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program, and amendments to the operating and capital budgets. Additionally, two items failed to pass: a resolution concerning the Unified Planning Work Program and an ordinance regarding a garbage collection discount for residents receiving Supplemental Security Income.

The council meeting featured a guest presentation regarding the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code, covering its adoption, implementation, and specific requirements for Class 1 and Class 2 hazard zones, including structural hardening, roofing, and site landscaping standards. Additionally, several work groups provided updates: the Member Engagement group reported on efforts to coordinate with subject matter experts for future presentations; the Emerging Issues and Trends group detailed progress on a new submission form and landing page for identifying emerging topics; the Public Awareness group discussed analyzing social media metrics to improve community outreach strategies; and the Training and Education group highlighted the development of instructional one-pagers and educational testing materials.

The commission reviewed past community events and public relations activities held at the cemetery. Financial updates were provided regarding the account balance and grant fund usage. Discussion regarding monument orders highlighted delays in shipping and delivery. New business included the approval of reimbursements for landscaping supplies, updates on repairs to the cemetery's water system, and authorization to purchase root management equipment. Additionally, the meeting addressed the resignation of a commission member and the process for appointing a successor.

The meeting featured a guest presentation focused on data centers, covering the growth of hyperscale facilities in the U.S., their typical design and mechanical requirements, and the challenges associated with lithium-ion battery energy storage systems. Key discussion points included fire protection strategies, the application of International Fire Code standards, hazard mitigation analysis, and the evolving classification of data centers as industrial occupancies under the building code.
