The public hearing focused on the proposed 2027-2036 Capital Improvement Plan. Stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and representatives from civic and advisory associations, provided testimony regarding the renovation needs for Thomas Jefferson Middle School and Swanson Middle School. Discussion centered on concerns about budget cuts and the need for adequate infrastructure, safety compliance, and increased capacity to support growing enrollment. Additional input was provided regarding the importance of sustainable practices, climate resolutions, and alternative financing mechanisms to protect project scope and fiscal health.

The meeting featured an update from the Office of English Learners regarding increased staffing levels, student schedule reviews, and the implementation of English Learner Network grants at selected elementary schools. Discussion also covered summer school staffing and programming specifics. The committee reviewed findings from student interviews conducted at several school sites, identifying common themes regarding English and content class support. Based on these insights, the committee formulated recommendations centered on professional development for classroom interaction and the enhancement of co-teaching and co-planning practices.

The committee held an election for the new student leadership team. The Social Studies office provided a legislative update regarding the inclusion of African American history as a World History credit and discussed changes to SOL testing, including the implementation of performance-based assessments and adjustments to 4th and 7th-grade testing requirements. Additionally, the committee received an update on the 5th-grade curriculum progress. The School Board update addressed the future of the SSAC committee structure, an increased focus on math resources, and new directives for the Social Studies work, including investigating SOL proficiency and the implementation of content time recommendations. The committee decided to formally express concerns regarding these directives to the School Board.

Key discussion topics included the effectiveness of co-taught classes, the benefits of advanced academic courses for English learners, and the need for increased interactive speaking opportunities in classrooms. The committee identified concerns regarding the exclusion of SLIFE students from recent interview groups and discussed the necessity of gathering perspectives from struggling students and long-term learners in future sessions. Additionally, the committee addressed teacher training for language domain incorporation and the potential for increased EL specialist support in schools.

The committee meeting covered an update from the Office of English Learners regarding current student population data, curriculum development, and upcoming leadership conferences. Members reviewed NIATx training materials focused on process improvement principles. Additionally, the committee discussed the ongoing focus for the school year on secondary English learner education, identifying key knowledge areas and questions intended to guide future outreach efforts to students through interviews and focus groups.
