The Planning Commission discussed and took action on several items, including a preliminary plat for the Paramount Hill Plaza development, which proceeded toward default approval. The commission granted final plat approval for the Springs at Opelika subdivision, subject to several staff recommendations, and provided a positive recommendation to the City Council regarding the annexation of the Gunn property on Lafayette Parkway. Additionally, the commission tabled a proposed zoning ordinance text amendment concerning various retail categories—such as liquor stores, tobacco/vape shops, and consumable hemp retailers—to allow for further review. Finally, the commission recommended that the City Council approve the renaming of Joann Drive to Faith Way.

The council held a work session and a regular meeting to discuss several administrative and community items. Key topics included a new process for downtown street closures, which has been streamlined through Opelika Main Street. The council also held public hearings regarding multiple demolition requests and weed abatement assessments for properties on Martin Luther King Boulevard and Magnolia Street. Finally, the council received a community representative who expressed appreciation for their ongoing support of the annual Juneteenth celebration.

The council discussed a real property exchange and lease agreement with the East Alabama Health Care Authority to facilitate the construction of a new fire station. The commission also discussed drainage issues causing water to flow into building entries from the sidewalk and reviewed pending enforcement cases.

The City Council meeting included a work session and a regular meeting session. The Mayor provided an update on a recent visit to Faith Technologies, which is set to become a new corporate partner. A discussion took place regarding a scam involving fraudulent emails sent to constituents about street closure charges, with the City Clerk advising caution regarding unsolicited communications. The council recognized students from Opelika High School for receiving the Alabama Seal of Biliteracy. Furthermore, the Mayor presented a proclamation declaring May 7th as Children's Mental Health Day in recognition of the Peace Project. Finally, the council remembered former council member Dr. Robert Lofton by declaring May 2026 as ALS Awareness Month to honor his contributions and advocate for research and support for those affected by the disease.
