The board discussed and acted upon several items including the resignation of Trustee Byron Wilson, the appointment of Roger Combs to fill the resulting vacancy, and the adoption of a Self-Help Strategy for ordinance enforcement regarding a property at 8501 Lakeshore. The ordinance enforcement plan involves scheduling a show cause hearing, contacting utilities, hiring contractors, and billing the homeowner.
The board meeting included a presentation by a guest speaker regarding drug enforcement and prevention programs within the county. Key discussions involved reports on IT infrastructure challenges, pump station maintenance, and the resignation of a trustee. Business items included an amendment to the Water and Sewer Ordinance regarding delinquency billing thresholds, the approval of a roadside weed spraying contract, setting compensation rates for the Planning Commission Secretary, the renewal of a fire and rescue services contract, and authorization for maintenance and alterations at the Township Hall.
The board addressed retroactive compensation issues involving the former Treasurer, Clerk, Deputy Treasurer, and Deputy Clerk. The board voted to rescind a previous resolution regarding this retroactive pay, determining it violated the Michigan Constitution. Additionally, the board authorized the township attorney to pursue legal steps to recoup funds paid out to former officials. Public comments were heard regarding sewer assessments and financial oversight.
The board discussed and approved several financial and operational items, including the proposed 2026-2027 fiscal year budget and an amended budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026. Compensation adjustments were approved for various township officials, including the Clerk, Treasurer, Supervisor, and Trustees, as well as an increase in per-meeting compensation for the Planning Commission. Operational approvals included the installation of a new electronic marquee, the purchase of two electric generators, and an increase in the contract fee for the Township Assessor. Additionally, the board reviewed progress on properties failing to hook up to sewers, which are currently subject to legal proceedings, and approved spraying for ditches.
