The meeting focused on updates regarding a recent bias incident reported through an anonymous Instagram site, involving cyberbullying. A campus climate survey with a 25% response rate revealed that while the overall campus climate score was 3.9 out of 5, underrepresented minority (URM) students perceived Wingate as less inclusive than white students. The survey also showed a significant increase in witnessed and experienced bias incidents. Key takeaways included a worsening climate compared to previous years, widespread bias incidents, declining endorsement of education-focused DEI initiatives, and a perception among URM students, faculty, and staff that Wingate is less welcoming and inclusive. Recommendations included university-led initiatives for specific groups, improved hiring practices, education on the benefits of DEI, and direct action to address bias incidents. Future steps include planning an August retreat and reviewing agenda items.

Wingate University Deib Council Meeting Minutes
The meeting addressed scheduling changes for future meetings, a bias incident report, and the results of a climate survey administered to 700 students. Plans were made for town hall meetings in March and April to discuss the survey results, potentially in conjunction with the Faculty Senate. The process for recruiting new DEIB Council members was also reviewed, aiming for a diverse group of no more than 14 members. New subcommittees were proposed focusing on Safe Zones, commemorative spaces, communications and newsletters, and NCBI team training. Existing subcommittees reported on their progress, including updates on a diversity hiring guide, FADE training, and the climate survey. Upcoming DEIB events included Black/African American Heritage Month observances, a visit from the Sankofa African American Museum on Wheels, a focus on Black Male Success, and a Cherokee Cultural Immersion Excursion.
