Perry World House University Of Pennsylvania Webvtt
The discussion centered on 'Freedom of Expression in the New Media Landscape,' addressing the evolving media environment, challenges to freedom of expression enshrined in the US Constitution, and the weaponization of disinformation. Key topics included the cultural shift from the early, utopian vision of the internet (like the 1990s feminist blogosphere) to a more dystopian present dominated by corporate capture and issues of audience rights versus speaker rights. The conversation explored the loss of privacy and anonymity due to platform corporatization and the tension between the need for anonymity for vulnerable communities and the lack of accountability it can afford to bad actors, such as those engaging in online harassment. Furthermore, the speakers addressed censorship, noting a current perceived effort to silence speech and criticism, particularly within academic settings, and the importance of upholding the public interest framework for media and expression.
