Lehman College of the City University of New York Program Proposal 2027
This document proposes the establishment of a Bachelor of Arts degree program in Special Education Teacher Education at Lehman College, effective Fall 2027. The program aims to address the critical shortage of special education teachers in New York City by offering an accessible pathway to initial New York State teacher certification for Pre-K through 12th grade. Key components include a dual major in Special Education and a liberal arts discipline, rigorous curriculum with extensive supervised field experiences, and an emphasis on inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive instruction. The initiative seeks to prepare a new generation of knowledgeable educators, foster strong school-community partnerships, and contribute to workforce diversification.
