The meeting included presentations on the Broward Up program by Broward College and on building the talent pipeline by FloridaMakes. Discussion topics included the percentage of students getting jobs within 90 days of completing a degree/certificate, the movement to online education, utilizing continuing education courses, developing partnerships with companies and libraries, and addressing challenges related to interstate mobility and retaining students in Florida. The council meeting included an update on the data group's progress, which is working on answers to data questions to supplement the council's efforts. A presentation was given on developing a framework for Florida's Credentials of Value, followed by a discussion on credentials, employability skills, and integrated data systems. Council members discussed the timeline and potential for revision of the strategic plan, with a particular interest in the technology component, including broadband. Council members will provide feedback on the Florida Department of Education's Credentials of Value Framework Project. The council will begin assessing the strategic plan for potential revisions.
The meeting focused on reviewing the draft work plans. Goal 1 was revised to include "high quality", defining the term "high quality", apprenticeship programs, and targeted industries. Strategies 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 were expanded to include "apprenticeships needed and any barriers" language. Strategies language in 3.1 and 3.3 was revised to utilize the word "expand" instead of "build" and "expand" instead of "develop." A new strategy 4.4 was added and moved to 4.1, with the addition of the Florida School Counselors Association. Goal 6 was revised to replace "Workforce" with "Talent Development", and the language on strategy 6.1 was revised. The work plan was approved by members to be recommended to the Florida Talent Development Council meeting on November 20, 2019.
The meeting of Group 3: Cross-Sector Collaboration and Engagement, included a review of edited work plans, focusing on Goals 1 through 5 and their respective strategies. Specific modifications were made to strategies within each goal, such as moving Strategy 1.4 to Workgroup 2, modifying Strategy 2.2, and including references to state and community colleges in Strategy 3.3. The work plan was approved by the members to be recommended to the Florida Talent Development Council (FTDC).
