Hartford International University For Religion And Peace Welcome Breakfast
The event served as a welcome breakfast for the appointment of Dr. Sherry Turner as the 12th president of Hartford International University for Religion and Peace (HIU). Remarks were made acknowledging that Dr. Turner is the first African-American president and the third female president in the university's history. A speaker detailed the rigorous search process, which involved a search committee composed of trustees, faculty, staff, and alumni, partnering with an external search firm. Dr. Turner's vision for HIU centers around six key areas: increasing the student pipeline, investing in people (students, faculty, and staff), innovating academic/spiritual programs, expanding partnerships, honoring the institution's unique purpose among peers, and enhancing internal processes. Dr. Turner also shared personal reflections on her history with HIU as an alumna and her commitment to leading the mission of fostering peace through understanding and dialogue.

The session included reading a land acknowledgement for the area where the City of Hartford is situated. The featured speaker was Professor Hussein Kamali, Professor of Islamic Studies and Interreligious Studies, though he was noted as a no-show and Dr. Ali Shakiba presented instead. Dr. Shakiba shared reflections on the Persian New Year (Nowruz), emphasizing the concept of 'days without sins,' and read a poem by Rabindranath Tagore. Discussions also touched upon the seven symbolic elements featured in the Nowruz festival and the importance of empathy and charity during the month of Ramadan.
