This document captures a Wednesday Gathering focusing on interreligious chaplaincy, featuring Reverend Dr. Gregory McGonigal. The session began with centering words, including a reading of Clint Smith's poem "All at Once" and a response poem by Nosa Saiba. Key discussion points involved the role of chaplains in acknowledging suffering while simultaneously naming the systemic causes of that suffering, emphasizing the ethical demand of the present moment. Reverend Dr. McGonigal provided background on his career path into multifaith chaplaincy, stemming from his upbringing valuing faith and education, his studies in diverse religious traditions, and his subsequent work building multifaith programs at institutions like Oberlin and Emory University. He expressed interest in discussing technical aspects of securing chaplaincy roles and broader theological or pastoral concerns.

The session, identified as the second module on Civics Education for Faith Leaders, was presented by Reverend Dr. Janette Wilson, co-led by attorney Rodney Howard. The session reviewed the structure of government, covering federal, state, county, and city/township levels, contrasting them with Cook County, Illinois, as a model. Key discussion points included the legislative process (Congress, state legislatures, reapportionment after the census), the separation and intersection between church and state, and the constitutional protection of religious freedom. A significant portion detailed the responsibilities of county government, such as taxation, public safety, public health, and managing county property and court systems. The discussion also addressed how governmental units impact religious organizations, particularly concerning tax exemptions, zoning, and the legal definition of a church for tax purposes (e.g., IRS 501c3 status), including characteristics like having written doctrine, regular meetings, and a fixed place of worship.

The session, titled "Black Faith Leader Collective: Wellness Practices for Spiritual Caregivers," focused heavily on the health and wellness of clergy, which was cited as the primary reason for delaying new business. Key agenda items included interfaith opening prayers, an overview of the meeting flow, highlights of 2022 accomplishments (including financing support for vaccine clinics, partnership with Discover Corporation for staffing a new facility, engagement with the Oikos Institute, and a donation from an Ahava Shalom Congregation in New Jersey), and the establishment of a new wellness initiative partly funded by the Lilly Grant. The group planned to establish a reading group focused on the book "Christians Against Christianity." Updates included a presentation from Reverend Alan Conley of Chicago Public Schools regarding partnership opportunities and upcoming collaborative meetings. Reverend Dr. David Bryant shared a personal testimony regarding a life-threatening heart attack and transplant in June 2022, emphasizing the importance of self-care for caregivers. The session concluded with an introduction of Mr. Larry Love from Movementum Health and Performance Group, who will provide ongoing wellness guidance.
