The board discussed a proposal from the Environmental Commission to enact a ban or moratorium on data center developments within the municipality. The discussion centered on the potential environmental and infrastructure impacts of such facilities, including high water consumption, energy grid strain, noise pollution, and minimal local job creation. Members debated the efficacy of existing zoning protections, specifically those provided by the Highlands region, and addressed the complexity of defining data centers in an ordinance to ensure that small-scale residential or professional technology use is not inadvertently restricted.
