This charter establishes the purpose, function, membership, and governance for the Forward March Community of Practice, a workgroup under the PA Governor's Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and Families (SMVF). Its core mission is to reduce suicide risk and death among SMVF by recruiting and implementing regional Communities of Practice (CoPs), developing educational plans and SMVF-centric trainings for providers, and distributing relevant resources. The community aims to foster collaboration, enhance professional development, and streamline suicide prevention practices across the Commonwealth.
The council held a meeting featuring a year-in-review presentation highlighting 2025 accomplishments such as committee meetings, employee recognition campaigns, and suicide prevention initiatives. A major portion of the meeting was dedicated to a panel discussion on veteran suicide prevention and the importance of identifying military service to ensure better access to tailored support, mental health care, and resources. Key topics included the impact of trauma-informed care for veterans, challenges in cross-agency information sharing, the specific needs of women veterans, and the integration of peer-based support systems. The council also recognized the Veteran Advocate of the Quarter for contributions to suicide prevention grant funding.
The agenda for the advisory council meeting includes updates from the Medical Director and the Admissions and Marketing department, as well as an employee recognition segment. Reports will be provided by the Deputy Adjutant General, the Executive Director of Long-Term Care, the Director of Veterans' Homes, the Commandant, and the Deputy Commandant. The council will also address a compliance report, old and new business, and matters for the good of the council.
