The Merkel ISD Local District of Innovation Plan focuses on gaining more local control and flexibility to improve educational outcomes. It includes exemptions from the Texas Education Code related to the first day of instruction, school day interruptions, teacher certification, contract service days, probationary contracts, designation of campus behavior coordinator, student discipline in a DAEP setting, transfer students, and alternative uniform group health coverage. The plan aims to allow the district to better meet the needs of students and the community.

The wellness plan is designed to implement policy FFA(LOCAL) and comply with the requirements for a school wellness policy. It focuses on nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, and other school-based activities to promote student wellness. Key goals include sharing nutrition information with families, delivering nutrition education, encouraging physical activity, and ensuring sufficient time for students to eat meals. The plan also addresses nutrition guidelines, compliance measurement, policy evaluation, and public notification.

The Merkel ISD Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC) meeting included updates on the wellness challenge, specifically the StepBet, and discussions about a potential Biggest Loser Contest in the Spring. The Abilene Recovery Council offered to organize a 5K/Color Run to raise funds for Project Graduation. The council discussed the sexual education curriculum, reviewed materials from Goodheart-Willcox, and planned for open meetings to present the curriculum to parents and gather feedback before making a recommendation to the school board.

The Merkel ISD Student Health Advisory Council meeting included a review of the updated wellness plan, with members agreeing on the final draft. The Wellness Policy Assessment Tool was reviewed and discussed, with members providing input. An update was given on spring wellness activities, including the Biggest Loser Contest, fitness classes, and the StepBet Challenge. Project Graduation is hosting a 5K Spring Fling, and summer CPR classes will be offered for staff. The yearly SHAC report for the school board will be prepared.

The Merkel Independent School District Improvement Plan for 2024-2025 focuses on enhancing student engagement, increasing the District STAAR Component Score, and improving college, career, and military readiness. It also aims to improve faculty and staff recruitment, retention, and capacity-building by prioritizing onboarding and mentoring new employees. The plan includes strategies for student, community, and stakeholder engagement and satisfaction, as well as efficient district and campus operations through coherent budget management, operational effectiveness, technology capacity, and well-maintained facilities.
