The board discussed a resolution on safe and secure schools and communities in response to the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The superintendent was directed to review school district safety and security preparedness and provide a report with recommendations.

The Montgomery County Public Schools' Secondary Program Analysis Plan outlines a strategic direction to enhance student access and opportunities across its high schools through a new regional model and updated boundaries. The plan focuses on strengthening local schools by ensuring comprehensive academic pathways, including business, finance, entrepreneurship, and advanced coursework, alongside expanding distance learning and authentic research experiences. It transitions away from the existing Down County and Northeast Consortium choice processes, establishing a model where students are assigned to a home high school but retain the option to apply for regional programs within their assigned region. The full implementation of this model, aiming to reduce access barriers and foster well-rounded, future-ready students, will commence with the incoming 9th-grade cohort in 2027 and reach completion for their graduation in 2031.

The summit focused on establishing the 2026 legislative platform, emphasizing education partnerships and collaborative efforts between the board and legislators. Key discussion topics included the need to regularly review and update state high school graduation requirements to better align with current career needs and durable skills, as well as the push for greater flexibility in using community school grant funding to support academic interventions in addition to existing wraparound services.

The meeting provided a forum for board members to engage with student leaders from across the county. Discussions centered on gathering student feedback, addressing concerns, and sharing information about central office initiatives aimed at maximizing the academic experience. Students and board members participated in rotating sessions to discuss four different topics, facilitating direct interaction and providing board members with insights into the daily experiences and perspectives of students.

The Board of Education formally moved to name the new school in Clarksburg, Snowden Farm Elementary. The name was selected to honor the Snowden family, an African American family that settled in the area and established a dairy farm in 1845, symbolizing the values of community, legacy, and mutual support.
