Regular Meeting
The discussion centered on implementing on-the-job teaching degree programs, specifically focusing on Master's degree pathways, to address rising teacher attrition and shortages across districts. A key topic was shifting the traditional higher education model to one embedded within the daily work of educators, utilizing lesson plans, video recordings of actual teaching, and classroom artifacts as course credit rather than traditional evening or weekend courses. Participants discussed the urgency created by declining education preparation pipelines at various universities, exemplified by significant drops in graduating candidates. A specific district leader detailed the selection process for 25 teachers entering a Master of Curriculum and Instruction program, prioritizing willingness to commit to five to seven years of service in the district. Furthermore, plans were discussed for launching an accelerated Bachelor's degree program in Special Education within three years, designed to move classified staff with zero prior credit toward full licensure.
