U.S. Geological Survey Science Strategy 2021
This document outlines the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) science strategy for the Chesapeake watershed, initiated with formulation in 2020 and implementation in 2021. The strategy aims to inform restoration and conservation decisions by addressing critical issues such as declining fisheries and wildlife populations, poor water quality, and habitat loss, exacerbated by land development and climate change. Key themes include: understanding how watershed activities affect stream health, fish habitat, and water quality; assessing the impact of climate change and sea level rise on coastal habitats and migratory birds; utilizing land use change data and forecasting for effective watershed management; and fostering an integrated science approach that engages stakeholders and decision-makers to ensure relevancy and effectiveness of management decisions. The strategy seeks to accelerate restoration and conservation efforts, while emphasizing climate change and diversity priorities.
