North Adams School Board School Board Meeting
The meeting focused on the impact of new state-level diploma requirements for the class of 2029 and beyond, alongside changes in school grading systems. Discussion centered on the need to re-evaluate how graduates are recognized, specifically regarding the valedictorian race, class rank, and the current weighted grade system. The board reviewed three potential options: maintaining the status quo, adjusting the calculation formula, or transitioning to a system based on published standards like Latin honors. Concerns were raised about unhealthy competition and the potential for existing systems to penalize students who participate in vocational or work-based learning paths.
