Pacific School Of Religion Service
The service acknowledged National Coming Out Day (October 11) and Indigenous People's Day (observed October 10, 2022). A land acknowledgment was offered recognizing the sacred and unseated territory of the Children of Speaking Organic People. The liturgy included invocations connecting to the four elemental directions (East for air/mind/inspiration, South for fire/emotions, West for water/feeling, North for earth/stability/physical self) and honoring ancestors. Speakers shared reflections on the meaning of 'coming out' as a continual process of growth, rejecting lies about queerness, and embracing full identity, including intersectional struggles for liberation, honoring diverse queer ancestors, and the importance of safety when choosing to disclose identity aspects such as sexuality, gender identity, disability status, religious affiliation, or mixed heritage. The proceedings also included musical performances and prayers.
