The committee engaged in a discussion regarding the potential implementation of the 'Silver Sneakers' Medicare benefit at the New London Recreation Center. Public comment highlighted the need for this program to support local seniors. The committee reviewed a financial analysis provided by the recreation center management, which suggested that offering the program could result in revenue losses due to unpredictable visit frequency and the conversion of existing members to the program. Council members questioned the assumptions used in the financial projections and requested further data, including real-world comparisons from other facilities, to better understand the potential impact and feasibility of the initiative.

Economic Development Committee Committee Meeting
The meeting focused on the potential termination of a 24-year-old development agreement for 330 Bank Street, which has remained in default. The discussion centered on the impact of a reverter clause, which currently acts as a legal obstacle to new investment and development at the site. The committee reviewed arguments from a land use attorney representing a developer interested in the property, who requested the removal of the reverter to facilitate potential multi-family housing projects. Members debated the necessity of maintaining the reverter for municipal control versus the goal of remediating and developing the site. The meeting also addressed the historical context of the site, including its status as a brownfield and previous failed attempts at development.
