Jackson County Board of Education Work Session
The work session addressed superintendent's comments regarding remaining school days and upcoming events, including a regular session meeting featuring student recognitions and a board retreat scheduled for March 20th which will include a DOT hearing on roundabouts and a tour of a new school facility. Significant discussion focused on the Georgia Reads Community Award, which includes a $20,000 grant to support sustained partnerships advancing literacy outcomes. Funds will be allocated to continue supporting the First Readers partnership, increasing pre-K enrollment, and funding materials for early literacy caregiver workshops. Updates were also provided on focusing on grade level reading, the rollout of new ELA standards which involve curriculum alignment and new requirements for Milestones assessments (multimodal texts and peer revision instead of writing tasks), and technology infrastructure. Technology discussions centered on proposing diverse path fiber connections to mitigate service disruptions from fiber cuts (37 outages reported since August 2025) and purchasing new network equipment for several locations as current licenses are expiring after five years.
