The board meeting served as a public hearing on the proposed 2027 budget. Key discussions included public input from a paraprofessional regarding the need for competitive wages and reliable pay structures, a detailed presentation of the proposed 2027 budget totaling $127.7 million, and an explanation of the financial projections and property tax levies for the education, operations, and debt service funds. Additionally, the board reiterated information about the district's favorable S&P bond rating.
The public hearing focused on teacher compensation and collective bargaining. Participants discussed the need for transparent financial communication, fair contract negotiations, and equity in pay for teachers. Concerns were raised regarding the value of teacher time, administrative oversight, and the impact of national and state-level challenges on public education funding. Suggestions were made to implement a confidential survey to improve communication and accountability between staff and the administration.
The board meeting involved the approval of consent agenda items, including accounts payable and payroll, and the adoption of several board policy updates. A resolution regarding the formal closure and cessation of use of specific school buildings (Miller, Clark, Gavit, and Lafayette) was approved to ensure compliance with state law. The board also approved the 2027 IDHS secured school safety grant, a memorandum of understanding with Skybound Education for future grant application support, and an agreement with Starbase Indiana Gary to incorporate two additional elementary schools into their STEM program. Public expressions were heard regarding concerns about building closure procedures and staffing/grant details.
