The meeting included a legislative update on Senate Bill 174, discussions on law enforcement training opportunities, sheriff responsibilities regarding animals and livestock, lamb/sheep tail docking, livestock welfare issues, and the West Virginia State Fair 100th anniversary. Public comments were heard regarding livestock auctions and tail docking in show lambs, as well as general animal welfare concerns.

The 2020-2025 Strategic Plan for West Virginia Farm to School focuses on meeting the needs of schools and creating viable market opportunities for farmers. Key areas of focus include coordinating collaborative activities to create a holistic farm-to-school system, informing and motivating producers to market and sell their food to schools, and improving the understanding of requirements and constraints in selling local food to schools. Targeted outcomes include increasing local food production and marketing, enhancing communication between producers and schools, and building support for farm-to-school initiatives through school gardens and nutrition education.

The board reviewed the animal care action activity log, received updates on VetStart WV and legislative issues, and discussed food safety, lamb/sheep tail docking, and the transport and selling of newborn dairy calves. Public comments were received. A motion to form a subcommittee to address lamb/sheep tail docking failed. Upcoming board reappointments were noted.
