The event marked the groundbreaking for the new Sandy Plains Public Safety Station, a project driven by Wake County's rapid growth, which has seen an increase of nearly 3,000 calls from 2023 to 2024 in the Fire Tax District. Speakers highlighted that the new facility will house both Northern Wake Fire Department and Wake EMS, improving response times and service quality, and will also provide working space for Wake County Sheriff's deputies. The project resulted from expanding the Wake County Fire Tax District and involved collaboration among commissioners, various county departments, ADW Architects, and G&G Builders.

The town hall focused on discovering mental health and wellness during the time of COVID-19 and provided COVID-19 vaccine booster updates. Panelists discussed the prevalence of mental health issues exacerbated by the pandemic, including complicated grief, trauma, depression, and anxiety, particularly in communities of color and among children. Specific concerns raised included increased suicide rates among youth, social isolation effects, and insufficient mental health resources. Discussions also covered recognizing signs of mental distress, such as changes in behavior, appetite, or increased aggression, and the importance of creating safe and brave spaces for communication. Another topic addressed was the increase in substance use and co-occurring disorders among youth, as well as providing support for loved ones struggling with mental health concerns or substance abuse who may be resistant to help. Information was provided on accessing the updated monovalent COVID booster, which became available in October 2023, and funding options for vaccination.

The event celebrated the opening of the new Wake County Public Health Center, a 154,000 square foot facility designed for comprehensive and holistic patient care, featuring 88 exam rooms and 20 dental treatment rooms. Speakers highlighted that the center will replace the Sunnybrook facility after 38 years and incorporate cutting-edge technology while maintaining a high-touch environment, honoring the legacy of Dr. James West. The new center will house numerous services, including pediatric, family planning, prenatal, WIC, dental, TB, refugee health, immunization, infectious disease, and STD clinics. The facility's design emphasizes ease of access, featuring a large parking garage and proximity to public transit. The successful realization of this project was attributed to collaboration among Wake County leadership, the Health and Human Services Board, community partners like Wake Tech and Wake Med, and federal funding secured by Congresswoman Deborah Ross.

The Eastern Wake Area Plan by Wake County is a strategic document designed to guide growth and development in the region over the next ten years. It focuses on preserving rural character, including low-density and farmland protection, and conserving natural resources. Key priorities also include addressing infrastructure challenges like traffic congestion and ensuring robust public services and safety, while opposing unplanned high-density development. The plan emphasizes expanding recreational opportunities and maintaining community identity and local values, utilizing public input to refine future land use classifications across rural, community reserve, and walkable center areas.

This document presents the Wake County Community Health Needs Assessment, which identifies four primary issues to be addressed over the next three years to improve the health and well-being of county residents. These key priorities are health insurance coverage, transportation, access to health services, and mental health and substance abuse. The assessment outlines a collaborative, programmatic response involving action plans with clear goals, objectives, and strategies to achieve positive change and enhance the quality of life for citizens.
