The Village of Coal City's 2018 Strategic Planning and Goal Development Executive Summary outlines a roadmap for the organization's future, updating its 2009 strategic plan. It identifies six key strategic priority areas: downtown development and beautification, economic development, strategic and controlled growth, infrastructure improvements, quality of life/quality services, and technology use and effectiveness. The plan establishes both short-term (1-3 years) and long-term (3-8 years) goals to guide policy priorities, provide quality services to the community, and determine future visions and directions for the Village as both a community and an organization.

The Coal City 2035 Comprehensive Plan provides a roadmap for the Village of Coal City to guide long-term, sustainable development and improve the quality of life for its residents. It addresses land use management, community facilities, transportation, parks, open spaces, trails, environmental features, tourism, and economic development. The plan aims to balance development with preservation, ensure diverse housing, diversify the tax base, improve infrastructure, optimize transportation, and leverage local assets for recreation and growth.
