The Sault Ste. Marie Area Public Schools, in partnership with students, parents, and the community, aims to provide all students with high-quality education in a safe, positive environment. The focus is on maximizing their intellectual, physical, emotional, and social skills to prepare them as productive, responsible citizens, emphasizing the importance of wellness and healthy habits.

The committee reviewed the Title VI budget, allocating funds for travel and supplies. Discussion included attending the Native American Critical Issues Conference, strategies to increase committee participation (such as sending reminders), and rescheduling the January meeting. Plans for Native American Culture and Heritage Curriculum implementation were also discussed, focusing on art projects, rebuilding relationships with the cultural department, utilizing a greenhouse for herbal remedy plants, and incorporating monthly Native American Heritage activities.

The committee discussed membership requirements and parent involvement, exploring recruitment strategies such as tri-fold displays, attending school events, creating a Zoom link, and providing opportunities for participation without attending meetings. Plans for a future meet and greet were also made, including details about food, supplies, activities, and a potential art contest with a post-event survey.

The board meeting covered various topics including business reports and approval of bills, reports from each school principal highlighting student achievements, staff recognitions, and upcoming events. Discussion included the approval of contracts and new hires, overnight travel requests for students, and the adoption of a land acknowledgement statement. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a discussion regarding the possibility of building a new community pool, with differing opinions expressed among board members regarding funding and priorities. Concerns were also raised about an article in the local newspaper regarding ESSER funds and the district's response.

The meeting addressed personnel matters, including a leave of absence request and the temporary suspension of a bylaw to expedite policy adoption. Several policies were approved, including those related to nondiscrimination, threatening behavior, student discipline, due process, and facility security. Discussions also covered the transition to a new policy provider, building readiness for the school year, staff and student safety protocols (including mask requirements and sanitizing supplies), and the handling of a prior athletic suspension incident. Future meeting locations and the presentation of academic goals and the Continuity of Learning Plan were also discussed.
