This brand name only request for the BD FACSMelody Cell Sorter is to be used by University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine & UPMC. The equipment is needed for atherosclerosis (clogged arteries) research as well as to study diabetes and liver disease. In the case of atherosclerosis, the FACSMelody measures specific proteins to determine how they contribute to atherosclerosis so the research may better understand the cells that contribute to the disease. The aim is to better prevent the disease and treat it after it develops. To aid in the research of diabetes and liver disease, the purpose of the FACSMelody is to measure specific cell proteins in patients to determine correlations between proteins identified in previous research with mice and actual people.
