East Orange Board of Education

The East Orange School District is developing a new strategic plan to establish key priorities and goals for the next five years. The plan is structured around three core areas: Collaborative Partnerships, focusing on strengthening relationships with parents, the community, and higher education; High-Impact Learning Experiences, aiming to provide robust, engaging, and future-ready academic and extracurricular opportunities; and Safety and Value, which prioritizes a secure, supportive, and nurturing environment for all students and staff. The overall objective is to build a roadmap that advances the district toward long-term excellence, preparing students for college, careers, and life by fostering critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration.

The meeting agenda included several key components: recognition for Black History Month through presentations by students and Superintendent Dr. Christopher Irving, and recognition of the East Orange Football Booster Club. The board reviewed first readings of several bylaw/policies/regulations concerning employment of the Chief School Administrator and sexual harassment policies, some of which were marked as New or Abolished. Extensive consideration of resolutions followed, covering educational support and student services, including approvals for various club activities, school programs (like NJSLA SOAR Saturday Program, Math Night, Career Day), field trips, grant applications (Local Recreation Improvement, AP & International Baccalaureate, High Impact Tutoring, PACE, Youth Build), professional development, and contracts (e.g., HMH READ 180 pilot). Labor Relations & Employment Services resolutions addressed retirements, resignations, rescission of appointments, leaves of absence, transfers, reclassification, salary adjustments for numerous staff members, revision/abolishment/creation of positions, and several new appointments, including instructional coaches and school nurses.

This document, a mid-point update from the Superintendent, outlines the ongoing development of the East Orange School District's five-year strategic plan, which is being shaped with extensive community involvement and is slated for Board approval in June 2026. The Labor Relations & Employment Services section addressed several personnel matters, including processing resignations, other separations, rescission of appointments, leaves of absence, salary adjustments for numerous employees reflecting training level or experience changes, the abolishment and creation of a single Custodian position, staff appointments for Federal Grants (Title I, II, and IV), and general staff appointments. Business Services resolutions included ratification and approval of bills, appropriation transfers, tax requests to the City of East Orange, and recommendations for bid rejection (Snow Removal Services) and award of proposals (Next Generation Content Management System). A key resolution authorized the reopening of the Cochran Academy facility under a new name: Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Academy of Gifted Education and Creative Reasoning, effective July 1, 2026.
